AMJAZZ Dance Studios is a technical training school offering structured, high-quality dance classes that focus on both technique and performance. Across all genres, our students are encouraged to develop as confident dancers and expressive artists.
We have three fully equipped studios featuring professional dance floors, full-length mirrors, and comfortable viewing areas for families. Many dancers begin their journey with us in Mini Movers (ages 3–4) and stay through to age 18, forming lifelong friendships and growing in a supportive, creative environment.
Our adult dance community is also strong, with over 30 regular adult dancers — some who have been with AMJAZZ for more than 25 years! We’re proud to have multiple generations dancing together, including mothers, daughters, siblings, and even grandparents.
Many of our students return during university breaks to reconnect or help behind the scenes, and some go on to train professionally across New Zealand and overseas, in places like Australia, Canada, Macau, and the USA.

Each year, AMJAZZ Dance Studios stages a full professional production at the Sir Howard Morrison Centre — the biggest event on our calendar! All dancers perform in both a Matinee and Evening show, with rehearsals beginning in Term 3 after exams. A full dress rehearsal and two studio rehearsals ensure everyone is stage-ready.
Costumes are supplied by AMJAZZ (a hire fee applies), and tickets go on sale via Ticketmaster in mid-November. A professional photographer captures the show, with photos available for purchase afterward — a lasting memory of an unforgettable experience.
Dance exams are compulsory for dancers enrolled with AMJAZZ Dance Studios, with the exception of adult classes.
The journey experienced when working towards a dance exam provides important life skills.
It’s not only about dance: the process enhances discipline, time management, dedication, determination and confidence to name a few. The performance in the examination provides satisfaction, enjoyment, pride and feedback to assist the students’ progression to full potential!
Through respected affiliations, dance exams for Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Acro are held in August/September each year. A national examiner visits the studio to examine our dancers on what they have learnt from the beginning of the year.
Dancers enter the exams in groups of up to 8. Each dancer receives a report and certificate after the exams are completed.
Within class time, all exam dancers will sit a mock exam. This is a practice exam, where the dancers have a run through of all the exercises, so they know exactly what happens in the exam. This will help to prepare them for exam day!
Dancers are required to wear their AMJAZZ dance uniform in class and in the exam.
The exam fee is set by the affiliations and are usually due in May each year.
